| One very good introductory book, which you should supply to everyone associated with the project, is Visual Modeling With Rational Rose and UML by Terry Quatrani (Addison-Wesley). One copy of the book is included with each Enterprise edition of Rose 98. While the book will not impress advanced OOA&D experts, it is as good an introductory tome as I have seen, and very readable. Another very good short overview book is UML Distilled: Applying the Standard Object Modeling Language by Martin Fowler (Addison-Wesley).
Applying Use Cases: A Practical Guide by Schnieder and Winters (Addison-Wesley) is the first book I've seen that explains how to exploit use cases in your project in simple, practical terms. It is the book I wish I'd had a year ago when was first struggling with use cases. And in late September, the long-awaited Service Pack 1 was released for Rose 98 Enterprise and Professional C++ Editions. Although I've had only a little time to work with it, it does solve a number of problems with both the base Rose product and some problems with language-specific code generation. If you get Rose 98, be sure to get the service pack also (available at www.rational.com/products/rose/98downloads.html). It's not a bad idea to bookmark their owners site (www.rational.com/products/rose/owners.html) and check back periodically for new example scripts, models, and service packs. LJJ |
