| MindRover MindRover is an online game by CogniToy in which you equip and program a robotic rover that moves, fights, and races against the rovers created by other players. The action all takes place in a virtual 3D space station world. You select capabilities for your rover, and then visually wire its sensors to controls to give your rover unique capabilities. CogniToy calls this "3D strategy/programming," and says the game requires gamers to "think more and twitch less." (Sighted by Russell Jones) | Amaztype And the award for interesting, but not terribly useful display of information design using a public API' goes to ... Amaztype. This site uses the Amazon API to perform a keyword search (either by title or author) and then displays the book matches using thumbnail book jacket images. You can then click on the images to zoom in and get a popup with basic product details such as publisher and the Amazon sales rank. As a purely academic exercise this is pretty cool but the developer chose to display the results in a pictogram of your keyword and to thus use the same results many, many times, making it dreadfully slow. But it's nice to see people putting some creativity into those exposed APIs. | PostSecret Psst! Wanna know a secret? Or tell one? Are you curious to know what others' secrets are? Take a peek into the hidden world of human secrets on this site, which invites people to send anonymous postcards containing a secret and then posts them for everyone to see. You can quibble with the presentation (all the secrets appear on one long scrolling page)--but I bet you read them all anyway! (Sighted by Russell Jones) | DiscoveryHealth.com This Discovery Channel site is chock full of interactive demos, in-depth articles, tips, discussions, and a whole lot more. The animated body atlas and pregnancy calendar were my personal favorites, but there is a wide variety of topics to choose from. (Sighted by Carrie Sherrill) |
