National Anthropological Archives
This site isn't terribly sophisticated, and I don't think its simplicity is intentional. However, it works due to the complexity of the subject matter. Here's where you can find, among other things, an online exhibit of the Fieldwork Diary of Alice Cunningham Fletcher, who camped with the Sioux for some time in 1881. (sighted by Erin Gannon)
Breughel Lecture de Tableaux
This is another site that consists mostly of HTML pages. Again, it's the organization that counts. This was a completely painless way to get acquainted with a painter who's work I'd never seen. I'm sure it would be even better if my knowledge of French wasn't limited to "Trois bieres, s'il vous plait?" However, if I was to be asked to build a site for a painter buddy, I'd use this as a model. (Sighted by Erin Gannon)
Lands' End
Why fight the crowds at the mall? The My Model feature of the Lands' End Web site enables you to create a virtual model in your likeness and "get your own fashion advice." You select every feature of your virtual self, from height, weight, and body shape to eyes, nose, and hair. Once the program renders your model, you can try on any Land's End outfit from your desktop. (sighted by Glen Kunene)
Frontline: The Long Road to War
This site is not only well-built, it is also timely and useful. It was built for Frontline's special, "The Long Road to War," which has been airing on PBS since March 17. Drawing on eight previous Frontline episodes featuring the American-Iraqi drama, this new special takes you through the history of Saddam's regime along with America's involvement in Iraq. It features interviews with key players from the Reagan, Bush Sr., and W. Bush administrations, weapons inspectors, journalists, and Iraqi defectors. Whether you're on the "left" or the "right," the program and the website both work to reveal the full complexity behind each historical moment that has led us to the present one. Fruit New Media
The theme animation along with the navigation on this site is really great--even the site loading progress bar follows the theme. It did make me a little hungry though--and if you have a very slow connection, you may have time to get yourself a snack between sections. (Sighted by Carrie Sherrill)
