| Ideas Happen This MSN site showcases the ideas of inventors or all kinds and give people a chance to vote for which of these innovators will receive $25,000 to make their idea a reality. Some of them seemed a bit silly, but all of the ones I looked at were certainly good ideas. (Sighted by Carrie Sherrill) | Billy Harvey Music This promotional site for a musicial is way cool. You can follow the main character around the site by clicking on different pictures (hint: click on the blue background to zoom out). If you click on a song he'll sing it to you. And if you click on something *else* in the middle of a song, he'll stop, tell you about what you clicked on, then go back to the song where he left off. The seamlessness is amazing. (Sighted by Trisha Merriam) | The Straight Dope If you've never heard of Cecil Adams' column, "The Straight Dope," you're in for a treat. In his widely syndicated column, Adams answers reader questions in a scientific and (presumably) accurate, yet highly entertaining manner. And he provides answers for an unbelievable range of questions, everything from "Which freezes faster, hot water or cold?" or "Why do clouds of gnats always hover around a fixed point in mid-air?" to "What happened to Mercurochrome?" (Sighted by Russell Jones) | 2004 Year-End Google Zeitgeist Based on billions of searches conducted by Google users around the world, the 2004 Year-End Zeitgeist offers a unique perspective on the year's major events and trends. It is a bit fluffy, but fascinating at the same time. The interactive section provides a nice graphic timeline of important events and hotspots month-by-month. (Sighted by Carrie Sherrill) | Entrez, the Life Sciences Search Engine With all the publicity being given to generalized search engines these days, it's worth noting that dedicated search engines are improving too. Entrez lets you search across a large collection of scientific databases in one place. In addition, the site contains links to search PubMed, the Human Genome project, and many other individual databases. (sighted by Russell Jones) |
