Telephony Isn't All Talk for Java Developers (cont'd)

Code It Yourself

You can code and compile this application yourself, place the resulting files on your Java-enabled server, and, if you choose, my company provides a free area where you can provision your application (http://community.voxeo.com), to experiment with this exciting capability yourself.

It doesn't take much imagination to see that, with the addition of text-to-speech, which is done by simply including plain text where you see voice files as we did immediately above, almost limitless voice applications can be created without straying too far from Java and without knowing much more about telephones than how to dial a number.

It's a brave new world we're facing. It's time to start thinking about what you could do with a billion more potential users. What do you think?

Lee Anne Phillips cut her first networking tooth on ARPANet at UC Berkeley and has worked in networking and telephony since her tender years. She is the Director of Publications at Voxeo Corp., writes frequently on Internet subjects and programming, and knows how to punch down cable, too.
